Safe & Secure

A bit of a round up of ‘bits & pieces’ that have caught my eye…

ICE – In Case of Emergency

Firstly is the ICE patch… a simple, but clever idea, and one of those things you hope you’ll never need. It’s a set of stickers you can apply to your crash helmet that give the Emergency Services access to your vital info by scanning a Quick Response code.nineteen_seventy_six_poster

ICE Patch QR Codes to make it easier and faster for the emergency services to access your vital information. There’s no need to search your person for a medic alert bracelet. Your health and contact information is at their fingertips. It’s inexpensive and impossible to leave at home. The emergency services can immediately establish who you are, who to call and access any medical information that could help to save your life. They know it’s accurate and current, because you gave it to them.  Some…

FarGo… New Scooter Dealership for 2Tone City

crocodilejock's avatarlambrettista.net

FargoScootersFargo Village in Coventry is an eclectic mix of creative businesses – (think Brick Lane / Camden Market) and has been joined by  an emporium for local scooter enthusiasts… Fargo Scooters. The shop is stones throw from the Hand & Heart pub, a frequent haunt of Coventry’s famous 2Tone bands The Selecter & The Specials in the 70’s. As well as having workshops to repair and restore scooters the shop is ositioning itself as an emporium for vintage and new clothes… it’s also a cool place to just hang out. If you’re in the area, I’d say it’s worth a visit… Via The Coventry Telegraph

Old Blue Rides again

oldblueoldblue2

Now the tale can be told. Old Blue the 1985 plastic fantastic Honda Elite Deluxe has been restored and returned to it’s original owner. We had to search for the documentation and keys and then threw it in the back of a truck and took it to GreaseMonkey Mark. Who hooked it to a new battery and it started first try. First try after 14 years. Mark gave it the once over, new battery and mirrors and we gave it a good cleaning and drove it unregistered across town twice.

The morning of the surprise return of Old Blue was a torrential rainstorm but Brother Mike rode through canyons winds to return the Scoot. Mike said he’d ridden in worse in Thailand. But not on a nearly 30 year old scoot through a major canyon windstorm.

We returned the Scooter and Bro Rich was without words. We lied to him repeatedly as to the scooters condition. We hinted that it may have to be scrapped. He was over the moon with happiness. A labor of love and brotherhood. This would not have happened without the tireless efforts of Bro Mike and Greasemonkey Mark. Gratitude y’all

Go, land speed racer, go!

If you’re a regular reader, you know that people do indeed race scooters. But something you may not know is that people also set land speed records with them.

One such person is Jaylin Billig of Houston, Texas. She and Maverick, her 2009 Genuine Buddy Blackjack, are preparing to make their third trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah. Yes, the very same Salt Flats people like Craig Breedlove have traveled at mind-boggling speeds in vehicles that more closely resemble jet fighters without wings than cars. Or motorcycles.

Jaylin and a host of others will be spending the next six days making runs up and down the storied salt, a surface she describes as “like riding on wet concrete.”

I was sent this fantastic pic last week, by Steve Mason.  Although I have been a fan of his music for a while now, (He was the lead singer and one of the founding embers of the Beta Band, more recently releasing musing as King Biscuit Time, Black Affair, and under his own name) for some reason I never had him down as a Lambrettista. In fact he’s been riding Lambrettas since 1987… his first being a “bucket” of a SX 150 he picked up for £175. We all know that £175 was a lot more in 1987, but you can’t help thinking “those we the days!”

If you want to catch Steve Mason live, At the Festival No. 6 in Portmerion, and then he’s at the Blackheath Festival.  After that he is DJing at The Social in Little Portland Street, London W1, on Saturday 13th September. You can follow…

Movie banner Photo?Scooter Cannonball Run: The Movie

The ease with which one can make a movie today is truly astounding. Where it once took tons of complicated equipment and armies of technicians, now all you need is a smartphone and a laptop with some software you can download for free.

It should therefore come as no surprise that someone wants to make a movie about an epic scooter road trip.
