Shrewsbury Scooter Club - Ride out Fundraiser

The Severnside Lions Scooter Club. I took the original photo at the summer “Ride-out”, a fantastic event – not supported by local press, but with a huge public following. They raised a ton of money which they awarded to local causes.
I decided to work a little on the original, allowing only the red to show through. It was a first for me (using the editing software in this way), and I’m pretty happy with the results.
Of course everyone has an opinion – mine (on the day) is the one that counted – but I’m interested to see if you think it was the right move?
Over to you…

Ebretta Mk2

EbrettaI first wrote about the Ebretta back in May 2012… a classic Lambretta with an electric power train. Well, now Siagon Scooter Centre, the guys behind the Ebretta and the Vespa Styled version the Vtronic have released  a Mk2 version. On the surface, not a lot has changed, and that’s a good thing. It still looks like a classic lammy. But under the skin, there are numerous improvements. The battery system now includes an integrated PMC, and the cells are smaller and more powerful. There’s a new SevCon digital display unit, and a DC converter so that standard lighting can be used… although LED lighting comes as part of the package.

It’s nice to see a project as visionary as this is still being pursued and developed. And that a company realises there is a market for classic scooter looks with state of the art internals. Of course, if an…

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland

Very tempting. Yesterday I started the Scoot and I could tell that AKI as I call her, wanted to go for a spin. But since the roads weren’t plowed I figured I would have to wait. Hoping for a new years eve or new years day ride… I will call the ride the frosty ball. Hopefully the first of many frosty ball rides.

Cold Weather Riding

Just because the weather outside is “frightful,” it doesn’t mean it can’t be “delightful.” Riding a scooter in the winter just means better preparation and a little thought.

Silk is your Friend

One of the best natural fibers is silk. It’s excellent at retaining warmth and wicking moisture away from the skin. Even on the coldest days, silk can keep you warm. You can get for most body parts including your hands, arms and legs. Surprisingly, it’s really quite affordable.

Water turns to Ice

Even modest amounts of moisture can become dangerous if temperatures drop below freezing. It’s smartest to avoid riding directly after storms and on very cold days. Black ice is very dangerous for scooterists.

FF with No Fog

A full faced helmet with a good supply of no-fog on the screen provides great shielding from the cold while still allowing you to ride. It may not be the most exciting choice of head gear but it does provide the most warmth and most protection from the elements.

Shorten it!

Before heading out on a long ride, try a short one first. Take a quick spin to the store, grab a cup of coffee or simply ride around the block. If a short ride makes you uncomfortable with riding or the weather, then you know a long ride will turn you off.

Winter riding does limit our options but don’t necessarily eliminate riding. Just plan ahead and keep warm!

Frosty Sunday

Today was a lovely day in the sun but a ride up the canyon in the shade proved to be frosty endeavor. Temperatures below 40 really do make for a cool ride but still, Jeff and I managed to get a quick one in before the early sunset. While the club forms, we are working on finding some fun easy rides which can share when we have many members. A quick jaunt from the Masonic Temple parking lot to the Oaks is a nice little short run.

The scoot doesn’t have to be perfect. It will age, it will show imperfections over time. Try as we might; it will still age as we do. But there is beauty in aging. Once aged if cared for it will be called Classic.
